Food Guide

Healthy eating is about feeling great, having more energy, and keeping yourself as healthy as possible. This can be achieved by learning some nutrition basics and using them in a way that works for you. You can expand your range of healthy food choices and learn how to plan ahead to create and maintain a satisfying, healthy diet.

For many years, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has made recommendations concerning the major categories of food products and how much of them we should consume to maintain a healthy diet. First published in 1980, the Dietary Guidelines is the federal government’s evidence-based nutritional guide to promote health, reduce the risk of chronic diseases, and reduce the prevalence of overweight and obesity through improved nutrition and physical activity. To best illustrate their nutritional recommendations, they came out with the now well-known food pyramid guide.

Most people knew this pyramid existed, but few really knew what it said and even fewer actually followed its recommendations. So, after much criticism, the USDA modified the pyramid in order to make it easier to understand and more relevant to today’s way of living. The new Dietary Guidelines for Americans focuses on balancing calories with physical activity, and encourages Americans to consume more healthy foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fat-free and low-fat dairy products, and seafood, and to consume less sodium, saturated and trans fats, added sugars, and refined grains. Through the years the pyramid has changed and has now been transformed into the MyPlate.

Unfortunately all these USDA guidelines fall short on giving people the complete nutrition advice they need to choose the healthiest diets.  We wanted to take this concept one step further in order to help you make healthy food choices so we created the Little Choices Matter Food Guide which you can receive by signing up for LittleChoicesMatter.com updates.

Once you receive it, you will notice that it covers all of the important food groups and that it gives a range of servings for the amounts.
